Sounds sweet right? Yes, I have been a sweet tooth person from my childhood. What kind of a human being will I be if I don’t like Sweets :). From my childhood, my Dr. Uncle, who used to have a couple of bags of candy treats in his working table always, I used to be very happy just to go visit him when he is working so that he will give me some treats. I used to watch him give these candy treats to kids who were sick and come to him with health issues.
From the time I had my own set of close to heart friends, I used to give them these too. I still remember this small candy treat we used to get near our school which was called “Thomas Mitai” a gooey jaggery treat which used to last a long time while eating it. I used to share it with my friend Sairam.
The next thing I know is this candy called “Googly” a tangy candy with a powdered centre which used to be awesome! I guess I’m salivating even writing about it, I used to buy them every time I go to meet my 3 Idiot friends and share it with them! I even remember couriering it them once in a while (After saving my extremely rare / limited pocket money.
I felt this very simple effort was creating a good memory with my friends. I kept doing this on a regular basis in my life, but why “Candy Man” you ask?
Being a manager is always a job which sometimes is not comfortable for others because they mostly come to you thinking that you will be able to solve all their problems. So I had a secret up my sleeve to make discussing / working with me a good experience. So, my top draw of my desk drawer is always filled with different kind of candy. So, I used to have a lot of people just come and talk to me because the first thing I used to do was offer them candy and whatever topic we must talk after will always turn a little more comfortable. Whenever I go into a meeting take a bag of candies and the meeting becomes a little less bitter :) (You know how some meetings are and how they can soon get into a boring banter). Just because I used to do this, people started calling me “Candy Man”.
The World today so often focuses on the fault lines, highlighting differences and amplifying only the most extreme voices, in such a climate it becomes all too easy to develop preconceived notions about people and places.
I have been Welcomed with warmth and openness from everyone (Well almost everyone ;)) I have come in contact with in this lifetime. I’ve also witnessed how some people are helping forge a bond based on mutual respect and discovered a sense of joy and communion with such people by doing such simple things for each other which bring a sense or joy and smile in their busy lives.
I did use the word simple with the title because these kind of experiences happen is very small pockets like the small bubbles in your champagne they don’t last long but they give you an amazing feeling while they last. So if you can start doing these simple and beautiful things for others and see the magic happen.
Let’s explore life together with simplicity…Until the next best thing!
Love,
K.C.
